EPAWSS completes IOT&E

BAE Systems’ Eagle Passive Active Warning Survivability System (EPAWSS) has successfully completed Initial Operational Test & Evaluation (IOT&E) with the U.S. Air Force, marking a significant leap forward in electronic warfare (EW) capabilities for the F-15 fighter jet platform. The successful completion of IOT&E paves the way for full-scale production and deployment of EPAWSS.

EPAWSS equips the F-15E Strike Eagle and F-15EX Eagle II with a comprehensive suite of digital EW tools. This includes advanced radar warning, geolocation, and situational awareness functionalities, providing pilots with a critical 360-degree view of the battlespace. The system also boasts robust self-protection measures through its multi-spectral radio frequency (RF) countermeasures suite. This enables F-15 pilots to effectively detect, identify, and neutralize a wide range of threats, including both legacy and emerging dangers, in dense signal environments.

The EPAWSS translates to a significant improvement in mission success rates and survivability for F-15 aircrews. By providing superior situational awareness and advanced jamming capabilities, EPAWSS allows F-15s to operate freely and penetrate heavily defended airspace. Furthermore, the system’s modular and open-architecture design ensures its adaptability. EPAWSS can be seamlessly upgraded to integrate future capabilities such as fiber optic towed decoys and cognitive electronic warfare, ensuring its effectiveness against evolving threats for the foreseeable future.

The all-digital design of EPAWSS offers additional benefits. Compared to previous EW systems for the F-15, EPAWSS is lighter and requires less maintenance, leading to considerable lifecycle cost reductions. Additionally, EPAWSS integrates seamlessly with the F-15’s Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, further enhancing overall situational awareness for pilots.

BAE Systems is actively working to integrate cognitive EW functionalities into EPAWSS. This cutting-edge technology allows the system to learn and adapt to previously unseen threats in real-time, offering an additional layer of protection for F-15 crews.
