The test of a Bulava SLBM this month has been rescheduled to next year due to ice buildup at the test site.
Russia had planned to fire the missile on Dec. 17 from the White Sea region.

It is not clear why ‘Bulava’ testing was postponed due to ice build up at the test site. Does that mean that the sub. cannot operate in northern regions in winter due to ice which might damage the sub.? Or that the missile has to rise up penetrating the ice blanket which builds up to high depths. Either way it points out to limitations of SLBM’s from north. It also exposes the subs there to targeting from satellites and attacks which cannot be retaliated. The missile could be also tested from south-eastern regions which were not considered, I guess, due to the present tensions between North & South Korea.
