The U.S. Air Force has recently cleared the Boeing KC-46A aerial refueling tanker to pass fuel to the Lockheed Martin F-35A stealth fighter.
A pair of F-35As assigned to the 356th Fighter Squadron was refueled in mid-air from Guam to Singapore for the airshow there.
Accompanying the fighters was a KC-46A Pegasus assigned to the 77th Aerial Refueling Squadron, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
The 356th FS is in Guam for Exercise Cope North and the two jets detach from the main contingent to participate in the Singapore Air Show.
Issues with the KC-46A’s remote vision system had prevented the tanker from refueling stealth aircraft such as the F-22 or F-35A due to concerns that the refueling boom might scrap the stealth paint on the fighters during refueling due to poor visibility under certain atmospheric conditions.
The unit which is conducting the exercise as well as which the two F-35s belong to is the 355 FS, not the 356th. This can be seen in Cope North press releases as well as by looking at the Falcon symbol on the side of the aircraft in the picture.
