In a poignant moment marking the end of an era, the 457th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron (EFS) recently concluded its overseas deployment with the F-16C “Fighting Falcon” aircraft. This deployment holds special significance as it marks the squadron’s final mission with the venerable aircraft before embarking on an exciting transition to the cutting-edge F-35.

The 457th EFS, stationed at Prince Sultan Air Base (PSAB), Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, completed its last deployment with the F-16, symbolizing a shift towards embracing newer capabilities and technologies for the future of air combat. Upon their return to their home station at the 301st Fighter Wing (FW) in Fort Worth, Texas, the squadron’s F-16 fleet will find new homes and purposes.
The F-16s, which have been an integral part of the 457th EFS for nearly three decades, will be strategically dispersed to enhance the U.S. Air Force’s operational capabilities. Some of the F-16s will join Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, to serve as aggressors, contributing to training and readiness. Others will bolster the fleet of the 93rd Fighter Squadron at Homestead Air Reserve Base, Florida.
However, the transition is not just about retiring the F-16; it’s also about embracing the future. The 301st FW is set to make the significant leap to the F-35, a fifth-generation fighter that promises enhanced combat capabilities and performance in the evolving battlespace. While the transition is exciting, Lt. Col. David Snodgrass, 457th EFS Commander, acknowledges the bittersweet sentiment associated with bidding farewell to the F-16.
“These F-16s have been part of our squadron for almost 30 years and have safely carried [our] pilots through thousands of combat sorties,” said Lt. Col. Snodgrass. “Air combat has evolved, and we are grateful our squadron has been chosen to convert to the F-35. We intend to carry the strong heritage of F-16 combat prowess forward to the new airplane.”
The F-16’s agility and versatility have been central to its legacy, and Lt. Col. Snodgrass highlights his admiration for the aircraft’s maneuverability and adaptable functionality. Looking ahead, the squadron’s focus will shift towards mastering the capabilities of the F-35, while preserving the combat expertise cultivated during their years with the F-16.
As the 457th EFS concludes its final F-16 deployment, the squadron leaves behind a remarkable legacy, not just in terms of aircraft but in the dedicated Airmen who have contributed to its success. The transition to the F-35 represents a new chapter, one that underscores the squadron’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements and maintaining readiness for the challenges of the future.
