In a test over the Atlantic Ocean last month, the CH-53K conducted over-the-horizon heavy lift and troop transport ship-to-shore operations for the first time from USS Iwo Jima.
ATLANTIC OCEAN (November 20, 2021) A Marine Corps CH-53K King Stallion attached to Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron One (VMX-1) conducts a 27,000 lbs. light armored vehicle (LAV-25) drop during testing and evaluation operations onboard the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7), November 20. The CH-53K is currently undergoing initial operational test and evaluation to develop tactics, techniques, and procedures of CH-53K utilization as the Marine Corps modernizes and prepares to respond globally to emerging crises or contingencies. Japan is conducting a joint exercise with U.S. forces in the Kagoshima prefecture. A handout provided by the Japanese Joint Staff office shows one of the exercise itenary being an anti-ship missile deployment with the U.S. Marine Corps.
HMLA-269 has been invited to participate in exercise Cold Response in Norway and the unit is now training in Colorado in order to prepare the Marines to operate in cold and high-altitude climate.
