NY woman awarded over $1 million in damages for taking photo of gate guard

A 58-year-old woman has been awarded $1.12m in compensatory damages by a court after she was arrested for taking pictures of the HH-3E gate guard at New York Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing in 2009.

Nancy Genovese was taking photographs for a “Support Our Troops” website when she was stopped by a Suffolk County deputy sheriff. Her attorney said the deputy told her he would arrest her for terrorism to make an example of other “right-wingers.”

During her four days confinement in jail, she was subjected to humiliation and was strip-searched.
