Two Hornets got struck by lightning and managed to recover

One year ago, two F/A-18s from VFA-204 were flying over the Gulf of Mexico at 23,000ft when both were simultaneously struck by lightning that left the leader disorientated.

With sheer determination and help from his wingman, Cmdr. Abaxes “Chili” Williams was able to recover his Hornet safely back at Naval Air Station-Joint Reserve Base after a go-around.

For their actions, Cmdr. Williams and Lt. Cliff “Mover” Lemoine were both awarded the Air Medal on Jul. 1.
