Rob Weiss, executive vice president and general manager of Skunk Works, said a study on a clean-sheet design determined that the option was too expensive and risky compared to T-50.

He added that the T-50 is the only offering that meets all of the Advanced Pilot Training (APT) requirements and can deliver those capabilities on schedule.
