10 years after he was killed during a strafing run, remains of F-16 pilot return home

The remains of F-16 pilot Maj. Troy Gilbert were brought home to the United States on Oct. 3, 10 years after he was killed while carrying out a strafing run in northwest of Baghdad, Iraq.

He was carrying out a second pass when the aircraft impacted the ground at high speed and killed him instantly, Al Qaeda insurgents took away his body before U.S. forces could reach the crash site.

His remains were finally turned over to U.S. forces in Iraq last month by an Iraqi tribal leader.
