China said the two Japanese fighters flew close to its military aircraft over the Pacific Ocean and fired flares nearby.

Chinese military experts said the provaction was an attempt to force Chinese fighters to lock on their fire control radars on the Japanese planes in order for a nearby U.S. RC-135 to collect the data.

Tokyo denied that such an incident took place.
