Unmanned ‘wingman’ makes own decision during simulated BVR fight

The U.S. Navy has ran a series of simulations whereby unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) acting as ‘wingman’ in unmanned/manned teams had to make their own decisions during beyond-visual-range (BVR) air combat missions.

Each UAV is controlled by an intelligent agent which is part of the Tactical Battle Manager (TBM) developed by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL).

These agents employ Goal Reasoning techniques which allows them to self-select mission objectives when the situation changes or when the operator is inaccessible.
