Japan’s Defense Ministry is under criticism for its selection of the Aegis Ashore site in Akita. Officials disclosed on Jun. 8 that the elevation angles of mountains in northern Japan were calculated wrongly using Google Earth.
For example, the mountain peak at a site in Oga, Akita Prefecture was calculated to be around 15 degrees instead of the actual 4 degrees.
The errors occurred when officials took data of the altitude and horizontal distance of a mountain peak from Google Earth. However, they did not realize that the scale reduction of the altitude and horizontal distance are different when presented on the software.
