The incident took place near a gas field in the East China Sea.
Although the Chinese side did not lock their fire control radar on the Japanese ships, intercepts of Chinese radio communications indicate that the pilots reported saying they were making mock attacks on the Japanese vessels.
The incident took place in May this year.
