How NASA went to the Boneyard to gather parts for assembling the X-59

To build the X-59 Quiet SuperSonic Technology jet, Lockheed Martin and NASA acquired parts from other aircraft to save time and money.

A team of engineers from NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center went to the Boneyard at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base to ensure that those parts are suitable once the U.S. Air Force found them.

The landing gear for the X-59 came from two F-16s that were shipped to California along with their fuselages. The canopy is from a NASA T-38 while a U-2 contributed a propulsion system part.
