The KC-135 is used for refueling other aircraft in mid-air across the globe. It has a secondary mission as a transport aircraft, moving personnel and equipment. The competition is to be full and open plus “non-developmental.” It will replace the KC-135 and bridge the capability gap between the KC-46 and the future tanker KC-Z.
