The Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) is hoping that its karaage, Japanese fried chicken, recipe can help raise public awareness of the service.
Since 2018, it has been using the dish to broaden its appeal to the public without much success. But that didn’t stop the airmen from trying. Recently, a new media campaign has started on social media to showcase how different bases across the country create the dish using local ingredients.
Shunji Izutsu, JASDF chief of staff, hopes that karaage can overtake curry in popularity.
In Japan, the Maritime Self-Defense Force is famous for its curry dishes and restaurants near naval bases serve curry rice to cash in on the popularity.
