The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) has defended its decision to buy four Mi-171 helicopters from Russia.

Opposition politicians and social media activists have criticized the purchase during the current pandemic.
The SLAF argued that the new helicopters are needed to replacing aging rotorcraft that the island had sent to Africa as part of its United Nations peacekeeping commitment.
