Vice Adm. John Mustin, chief of Navy Reserve, disclosed in a statement submitted to the defense subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee that VFC-12 will being its transition to the Super Hornet Block 1 this year.

(Oct. 29, 2020) An F/A-18 Hornet of the “Fighting Omars” of Fighter Squadron Composite (VFC) 12 flies over Key West, Fla. while providing adversary support for the Strike Fighter Advanced Readiness Program (SFARP) for Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1. To recapitalize the adversary fleet, the service is hoping to replace legacy Hornets with used Air Force and Air National Guard F-16s as there are not enough Block 1 Super Hornets. VFA-204 is the other unit that is using the legacy Hornet for adversary training.

Mustin also hopes that new capabilities such as Infrared Search and Track systems and an Adversary data link known as RedNet can be installed on the adversary fleet.
