STSS scheduled to be retired

A decision has been made by the U.S. Missile Defense Agency to retire the Space Tracking and Surveillance System (STSS).

Formerly known as SBIRS-Low, the two demonstration satellites were launched into space aboard a Delta II rocket in September 2009.

Depleting fuel reserves plus an outdated control system lead to the decision to retire the experimental satellites.
