Hypersonic missile detection through UAV being considered by Japan

Japan’s Ministry of Defense revealed on Aug. 7 that they are considering using unmanned aerial vehicles for early detection of hypersonic missiles flying at Mach 5 and faster.

Japan intends to use an infra-red sensor to detect these weapons, such a sensor had been verified to be working back in 2019.

Existing missile defense systems find it difficult to detect hypersonic missiles. Unmanned aerial vehicles may be able to overcome this challenge.

UAVs are capable of continuous monitoring by choosing flight routes according to weather conditions. They can be deployed closer to the front line and if an unmanned aerial vehicle is shot down, there will be no loss of life, and the cost could be kept low.

A radar research project is also underway by the Ministry of Defense to detect and track hypersonic weapons from surface ships.

Additionally, the government is trying to build a “satellite constellation” consisting of dozens of small satellites that will be put into low-Earth orbit for defense against hypersonic weapons, and to create a multilayered surveillance network.

  1. The 1984 testing of a ASAT missile carried by an USAF F-15A was killed by liberals in Congress leofbhaving hypod by Carl Sagan who feared leaving the Russians blinded if they lost satellite coverage. At least one ASAT was fired at a target satellite to prove it’s workability.

Now Russia and China have boasted of having hypersonic capabilities while we are getting there. I am not saying that our enemies are hypersonic ready but interested in obtaining such a capability

I wonder if we were able to improve our ASAT capabilities as a black program to give us the capability but keep it secretive to ensure our enemies did not pursue such
