USS Monterey and USS Mitscher return to Norfolk two months after the arrival of USS Eisenhower

U.S. Navy cruiser USS Monterey and destroyer USS Mitscher return to their home port in Norfolk on Sept. 17, two months after the rest of the ships under the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group had return.


The two warships were temporarily assigned to the Reagan Carrier Strike Group covering the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan as USS Ronald Reagan had no cruiser to provide missile defense. USS Mitchser provided air defense support.
