Story of how Reach 806 landed in Kabul without normal runway lighting

The crew of a C-17 from the 3rd Airlift Squadron was on its fourth mission to ferry passengers out from Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan when they found out that the normal airfield lighting was out.

The mission, call sign Reach 806, had to make do with alternate landing zone lighting that Joint Terminal Attack Controllers at the airport were able to rapidly set up.

Approaching the airfield, the crew had difficulties locating the landing zone due to bright lights from the city. They were only confident to call for landing just 500 feet above the ground.
