Crash of F-15DJ likely due to disorientation of pilot

The crash of a F-15DJ from the Japan Air Self-Defense Force in January was likely due to the pilot becoming disoriented in flight.

The jet was in a climbing right turn to find another jet on radar when it started descending and crash. Investigators determined that the pilot tried to recover the plane two seconds before impact.

The crash killed Col. Koji Tanaka and Capt. Ryusei Ueta. Both were promoted posthumously.
