Paving for the eastern runway on Ascension Island has been completed and the first aircraft landed there on Aug. 31

Upgrades to the runways there is being monitored by the U.S. Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center under a $309 million project.
Work will continue on the western side of the runway, whereby it will be demolished and then rebuild.
