Japan hopes to have the new missile ready by fiscal 2029 and field updates to the launch software by 2026.

The news came as Inside Defense reported that the United States is keen to work with Japan to develop a counter-hypersonic interceptor.

Washington hopes to adopt the same approach that was used to jointly develop the Standard Missile-3 Block IIA interceptor with Japan. This will allow the Pentagon to share cost with a foreign partner.
