Construction of FCLP at Mageshima, Japan starts

Japan announced on Jan. 12 that it has started the construction of a field carrier landing practice (FCLP) facility at Mageshima.

The construction is expected to take about 4 years and the runways are expected to be finish in 2 years time. There will be two runways, one control tower, fuel facilities, and ammunition storage facilities added during the buildup. A berthing facility for warships will be built on the east side of the island.

The U.S. Navy is expected to use the FCLP to prepare its pilots for landing on aircraft carriers. A total of 20 practice days are expected to be carried out each year.
