F-22 shoots down “high-altitude object” over Alaska

The F-22 has fired another AIM-9X missile to shot down an aerial object. This time it took place over Alaska on Feb. 9. The Pentagon described it as unknown “high-altitude object.”

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the object was at flying about 40,000 feet and was a threat to civilian flights. It was about the size of a car, Kirby added. ABC News quoted a U.S. official as saying that the object was “cylindrical and silver-ish gray.”

A pair of F-35s were first sent to identify the object a day earlier. Two more F-22s were sent up the next day to observe it and the object was shot down.

The debris from the object landed in frozen wasters near Deadhorse, Alaska. Active duty and National Guard units stationed in Alaska are recovering the debris.
