Nimitz CSG and Makin Island ARG embark on joint operation in South China Sea

The South China Sea is currently witnessing an exciting display of naval power as the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group (NIMCSG) and the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group (MKI ARG) embark on a combined expeditionary strike force (ESF) operation. The NIMCSG is made up of some of the most formidable units in the U.S. Navy, including the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier, four Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers, and the squadrons of Carrier Air Wing 17. Meanwhile, the MKI ARG comprises units from Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 7 and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), adding a powerful amphibious capability to the operation.

The mobility and versatility provided by the amphibious platforms of the MKI ARG is a major factor in the success of this ESF operation. The ability to operate seamlessly and simultaneously on the sea, shore, and air gives the Navy and Marine Corps team a strategic advantage over potential adversaries. This unique value is highlighted by Rear Adm. Christopher Sweeney commander, Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 11, who stated that “combining the capabilities of CSG 11 with ARG/MEU, we expand the options this blue-green team provides the joint force commander, and increase our ability to create theater-wide effects in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific.” The Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, with the 13th MEU, enables the NIMCSG to utilize the full capabilities of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force, providing the mobility, sustainability, and flexibility to respond to any emerging threats or crises.
