Airbus’ plans to increase military aircraft production thwarted by lack of government orders

Airbus SE’s plans to increase production of its Eurofighter aircraft and other key weapons systems are being hampered due to a lack of commitment from governments to place orders, according to Michael Schoellhorn, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space. Despite the expected increase in orders for jets, drones and space-based products in the coming years, Airbus has not received the necessary orders to scale up production.

The slow issuance of contracts by European governments due to a lack of staff to vet the orders after years of reduced defense spending is exacerbating the situation.

Although Airbus has yet to receive the orders it needs to ramp up production, NATO allies are pushing for accelerated production. However, Berlin’s restrictive stance on arms exports outside Ukraine is contributing to the holdup. Schoellhorn said that production could still increase with a handshake deal, but ammunition and tank production for Ukraine and replenishing stocks are currently taking precedence over aircraft.
