Australia cleared to buy 220 Tomahawk cruise missiles

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency has made an announcement regarding the possible Foreign Military Sale of Tomahawk Block V and Block IV All Up Rounds (AUR) to the Government of Australia at a cost of $895 million. The Government of Australia has expressed interest in purchasing up to 200 Tomahawk Block V All Up Rounds (AUR) and up to 20 Tomahawk Block IV All Up Rounds (AUR), in addition to support for the three segments of Australia’s Tomahawk Weapon System (TWS).

This includes unscheduled missile maintenance, in-service support, engineering, and technical expertise to maintain the TWS capability, and other related logistical and program support elements.

This sale aims to equip Australia’s new Hobart class destroyers with Tomahawk Cruise Missiles, improving the nation’s capability to strike land targets at greater distances, with better precision. The decision to acquire the Tomahawks was announced in the joint ministerial statement on AUKUS back in September 2021.

The prime U.S. contractor for this sale will be Raytheon Missiles and Defense, Tucson, AZ.

U.S. Government representatives and contractor personnel will have to visit Australia on several occasions temporarily to support the delivery and integration of items, provide supply support management, inventory control, and equipment familiarization, and to include program and technical reviews. Nonetheless, there will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness.
