Nimitz CSG to visit Thailand

The U.S. Navy Nimitz Carrier Strike Group (CSG-11) has been making its way across the Indo-Pacific region since November 2022, participating in joint training operations and port visits with partners and allies. On Apr. 24, the Strike Group will arrived in Thailand for a scheduled visit aimed at strengthening the U.S.-Thai security partnership and celebrating the 190th anniversary of U.S.-Thai diplomatic relations.

Led by Rear Admiral Christopher Sweeney, Commander of Carrier Strike Group 11, the Strike Group consists of the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill, and the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Decatur and USS Wayne E Meyer. During their visit to Thailand, the Strike Group will participate in professional engagements and community-related projects, providing a valuable opportunity for U.S. sailors to experience the local culture and build people-to-people ties.

Prior to arriving in Thailand, the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier achieved a new milestone during its deployment in the South China Sea. The carrier successfully completed its 350,000th arrested aircraft landing, a feat that took almost 48 years to accomplish. Capt. Craig Sicola, commanding officer of Nimitz, and Cmdr. Luke Edwards, commanding officer of the “Fighting Redcocks” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 22 piloted the historic landing in an F/A-18F Super Hornet on the morning of April 22nd.
