According to insiders familiar with the matter, an official announcement regarding the finalized joint production agreement is expected during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming state visit to the United States on Jun. 22.
The F414 engine, a variant of GE’s successful F404 turbofan, has been selected for the Tejas Mark 2 fighter aircraft. India plans to acquire enough Tejas Mark 2 fighters to form approximately 10 squadrons.
While the deal is pending finalization and requires notification to the U.S. Congress, it highlights the broader collaborative partnership between the United States and India in the field of defense.
India is actively seeking increased technology transfer as part of the agreement, with a focus on expanding its knowledge and expertise in aircraft engine production. The Biden administration’s approval of GE’s involvement reinforces the growing defense ties between the two countries and lays the foundation for further advancements in U.S.-India defense cooperation.
