Thailand’s Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) intends to bolster its fleet by acquiring three Gripen jet fighters from Sweden, aiming to enhance its operational capabilities, according to official sources, the Bangkok Post says. The decision comes after the United States turn down Thailand’s request to buy the F-35.

The Gripen fighter aircraft are set to be added to Wing 7, located in Surat Thani, which already houses a fleet of 11 Gripen fighters. One aircraft was lost during a flying demonstration years ago.
The acquisition of these fighter jets is part of the RTAF’s efforts to modernize its fleet and ensure the kingdom’s air defense readiness. While the replacement of the F-16 fighter jets, which have been in service for three decades, is being considered, RTAF Commander-in-Chief ACM Alongkorn Wannarot has yet to establish a panel to study and select the suitable aircraft.
Although the United States has recommended considering the procurement of 4.5-generation fighter jets, such as the newer F-16 Block 70 and F-15, budget constraints for the fiscal year 2024 make it impossible to finalize a contractual obligation for such purchases.
The matter of selecting and procuring new fighter jets, including the potential future acquisition of F-35As, will be reviewed by the incoming commander-in-chief, who will assume the position on Oct. 1.
Bangkok Post also revealed that the RTAF intends to upgrade the radar of its Saab 340 AEW aircraft.
