Slovenia orders six AW139M helicopters

Slovenia is set to bolster its military capabilities with the acquisition of six advanced AW139M multi-role helicopters from Italy. The deal, signed by Defence Minister Marjan Šarec and his Italian counterpart Guido Crosetto, follows an amendment to the implementing agreement on military aviation cooperation between the two nations. Valued at $206 million, the government-to-government transaction includes the cost of certification by the Italian Military Aviation Authority, with an additional annual project management expense of approximately $468,000 for the Italian Ministry of Defence.

The AW139M helicopters are poised to enhance the operational capacity of the Slovenian Armed Forces (SAF), offering cutting-edge capabilities built to the latest safety standards. These versatile helicopters, known for their power, speed, and spacious design accommodating up to 15 passengers, will be instrumental in supporting SAF units and reinforcing the nation’s protection and rescue system.

One notable feature of the acquisition is the adaptability of the helicopters to mount a medical evacuation module, tailored to the specifications of medical teams. This strategic addition aligns with the SAF’s commitment to emergency response and humanitarian missions. The AW139M’s versatility extends to search and rescue operations, encompassing mountain rescue missions, and firefighting capabilities, with the ability to drop up to 2000 liters of firefighting material in a single operation.

The helicopters’ delivery schedule will be coordinated in early 2024, marking a significant advancement in Slovenia’s military capabilities and cooperation with Italy in defense matters.
