Raytheon’s GhostEye MR radar took center stage recently at White Sands Missile Range, proving its mettle in a crucial air base defense exercise. This advanced medium-range sensor marks a significant step forward in protecting critical infrastructure from airborne threats, building upon the success of the 2022 air base air defense experiment in Andøya, Norway.
At White Sands, GhostEye MR seamlessly integrated with the National Advanced Surface to Air Missile System (NASAMS), showcasing its ability to rapidly deploy, detect, and track live targets at extended ranges. This enhanced situational awareness provides precious decision-making time in the face of enemy aircraft, unmanned aerial systems, and cruise missiles.
“This experiment builds on the momentum of last year’s Andøya demonstration,” shared Jim Simonds, U.S. Air Force Air Base Air Defense Program Manager. “GhostEye MR clearly demonstrated its potential as a viable sensor option for integrated air and missile defense, exceeding expectations in terms of rapid deployment, precise tracking, and extended range detection.”
In Andøya, NASAMS successfully engaged and intercepted diverse aerial threats using multiple Raytheon missile types. This layered defense approach, now enhanced by GhostEye MR’s capabilities, represents a paradigm shift in air base protection. The White Sands exercise further validated this strategy, with GhostEye MR providing a comprehensive air picture for the command-and-control system, enabling precise threat assessment and coordinated responses.
