USAF embraces automation with Project Kinetic Cargo

The 48th Logistics Readiness Squadron at Royal Air Force Lakenheath has implemented Project Kinetic Cargo, a significant advancement in cargo processing efficiency. This initiative leverages deployable automated cargo measuring systems (DACMS) equipped with profiling lasers and scales.

Project Kinetic Cargo utilizes DACMS equipped with profiling lasers and scales. These systems capture precise measurements and weight of cargo pieces while they are still in motion, significantly reducing processing time compared to traditional, manual methods. According to the squadron, this automated approach delivers a 90% reduction in processing time per cargo item, directly impacting overall throughput and efficiency.

The substantial decrease in processing time thanks to DACMS translates to reduced manpower requirements for cargo handling. This frees up personnel for other vital tasks within the logistics chain, potentially leading to better resource allocation and improved operational flexibility.

“In its debut operational use, we concluded that it was very successful at reducing the manpower and time required to process cargo,” said Staff Sgt. John Mackey, 48th LRS air transportation function supervisor.
