Canada confirms MQ-9B SkyGuardian acquisition

Canada is entering a transformative phase to significantly enhance its national defense capabilities, as the government has committed to acquiring a fleet of 11 MQ-9B SkyGuardian Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI). This strategic investment, valued at $2.49 billion, underscores Canada’s dedication to modernizing its aerospace capabilities and ensuring it remains at the forefront of defense technology.

The MQ-9B SkyGuardian is poised to become a cornerstone of Canada’s defense strategy, offering a cost-effective multi-mission solution with robust and enduring capabilities. Tailored for prolonged missions, the aircraft excels in navigating harsh weather conditions and is designed to safely operate across diverse airspaces.

One of the key advantages of the SkyGuardian is its interoperability with Canada’s domestic and continental defense operations through NORAD. This interoperability extends to Canada’s closest allies, including the Five Eyes Alliance (FVEY) and NATO, facilitating joint operations and seamless information-sharing with allied forces. The MQ-9B SkyGuardian is not merely an acquisition; it represents a collaborative effort to strengthen defense ties and enhance the collective security of nations.

The procurement deal solidifies a longstanding and successful history between GA-ASI and Canadian industry. Leading Canadian businesses, including CAE, MDA Ltd., and L3Harris Technologies, have come together to form Team SkyGuardian Canada. This coalition is working closely with GA-ASI on the development, delivery, and sustainment of the MQ-9B, showcasing Canada’s vested domestic interest in advancing RPAS technologies. The collaboration emphasizes the synergy between international expertise and Canadian innovation, fostering growth in the aerospace and defense sector. The Canadian government says the aircraft will not need to routinely carry weapons during operations in Canadian airspace.

As part of the acquisition contract, General Atomics has committed to providing meaningful business activities and targeted investments to Canadian industry. The projected economic impact is significant, with expectations of close to 700 jobs annually and an injection of $97 million into Canada’s gross domestic product over a nine-year period. This economic commitment aligns with the Canadian government’s broader strategy to stimulate growth in critical sectors, ensuring long-term sustainability and technological advancement.

The MQ-9B SkyGuardian RPAS is set to be strategically stationed across Canada, with 14 Wing Greenwood, NS, and 19 Wing Comox, BC, serving as primary bases. The RPAS will also operate from a Forward Operating Location when supporting missions in northern Canada. The ground control center, housing the aircraft cockpits, is planned for Ottawa. New infrastructure will be developed in Ottawa to support the ground control center and RPAS operations at 14 Wing Greenwood and 19 Wing Comox, with infrastructure costs factored into the overall project budget.

Looking ahead, the first delivery of the MQ-9B SkyGuardian RPAS is anticipated in 2028, with full operational capability expected by 2033. This strategic deployment aligns with Canada’s vision to enhance its defense capabilities, ensuring the protection of its vast territory, including complex terrains such as the Arctic, and addressing emerging security challenges.
