China's Nuclear Forces: Operations, Training, Doctrine, Command, Control and Campaign Planning (PDF)
Larry Wortzel, commissioner of the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, published a paper in the U.S. Army War College's Strategic Studies Institute. The paper gives an insight on how China plans to cripple the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier battle groups using its ballistic missiles.

Using publications from the PLA for information about China's Second
Artillery Corps, Wortzel was able to piece together the different approaches taken by the Chinese military.

Two PLA Air Force (PLAAF) authors went through dozens of corporate web sites and military tactical data link operator guides, as well as North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and U.S. military tactical and technical manuals, to produce
a virtual guidebook on how to disrupt joint U.S. data control systems and military communications.

What is not clear is whether China will employ conventional or nuclear warheads against U.S. aircraft carrier battle group. It is also unknown if in the event of a nuclear attack, the carrier battle group would be targeted directly or if a high altitude burst is used to destroy communications and sensors.

A study by two officers from the Second Artillery Engineering College found that providing terminal guidance to a warhead could allow up to 100 kilometers of
maneuverability during a terminal attack.

The Turkish Patent Institute recently issued a decision confirming Lockheed Martin's assertion that the term "paveway" is a generic name used in describing laser technology in laser guided bombs.

An application to register the term "paveway" as a trademark was filed by the Raytheon Company in Turkey in 2005. That application was rejected by the Turkish Patent Institute in March 2007 based on the following findings: the term "paveway" is not distinctive since it is the name of technology which uses laser to guide bombs to a target; it specifies a characteristic of laser guided bombs; and, therefore, the term may be used by all manufacturers of the product.

Sukhoi deal hits turbulence as Russia wants to hike price
Russia wants to renegotiate its Su-30MKI and Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier contracts with India due to the falling dollar and double digit inflation in Russia.

India will also have to pay more for Gorshkov to be delivered next year due to shortage of funds at the Sevmash shipyard and a gross underestimation of the cost of cabling of the ship.

Snowbird jet crashed during air show practice
A Snowbird has crashed on May 18 during a practice near Great Falls, Montana. The team was scheduled to perform during the weekend at Malmstrom Air Force Base.

Eyewithnesses saw Snowbird 2 flown by Captain Shawn McCaughey left the inverted pass formation and smashed into a field near the base runway.

McCaughey did not survive the crash. He was supposed to be married next month.

His father said he died the way he would have wanted. "He always told me that. He said, 'If I'm going to die, I better die in a crash so I'll be happy'. And that's exactly what happened, unfortunately," said Ken McCaughey.
