The first time the People’s Liberation Army Air Force carried out a landing and take-off exercise from a highway was back in September 1989. The exercise involved a Il-14 and J-7s. It was carried out on a stretch of the Shenyang–Dalian Expressway. So far, the PLA has more than 10 such runways spread out in Liaoning, Shandong and Fujian provinces.
