Japanese lawmaker says Japan and U.S. should deploy intermediate-range missiles in Hokkaido

Speaking at an event organized by the Center for Strategic & International Studies, Japanese lawmaker Masahisa Sato, says Japan and U.S. should deploy intermediate-range missiles in Hokkaido.

The head of Liberal Democratic Party’s (LDP) Foreign Affairs Division, said the locals in Hokkaido are favorable to such deployments due to concerns with Russia.

The LDP proposed to the Prime Minister in a national security paper that Japan have a counterstrike capability to attack enemy missile units or bases before they can be used to attack Japan.

Sato added that those intermediate-range missiles can be pointed southwards to defend Japanese islands in the southwest corner of the country, alluding to the Okinawa islands.
