JSDF test SpaceX’s Starlink for improved communication

The Japanese Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) have embarked on a trial implementation of SpaceX’s Starlink satellite constellation since March, as disclosed by reliable government sources. This strategic decision aims to fortify the JSDF’s communication capabilities in response to China and Russia’s recent efforts to bolster their satellite attack capabilities.

Starting from the upcoming fiscal year, there are plans to fully leverage the exceptional high-speed communication service offered by the renowned U.S. space development company, SpaceX. Additionally, the SDF is actively working on arrangements to incorporate military satellites from the United States and other allied nations into their communication network.

To facilitate this integration, the Japanese Defense Ministry has entered into a contract with an authorized agent representing SpaceX. This agreement will equip the Air, Ground, and Maritime SDF units with cutting-edge Starlink antennas and other advanced communication devices. The SDF has been extensively testing this service at approximately 10 strategic locations, including military bases and camps, in order to identify and rectify any potential operational issues.

As the Defense Ministry already possesses two X-band communication satellites in geostationary orbit at a staggering distance of approximately 36,000 kilometers above the Earth’s surface, this collaborative endeavor with Starlink signifies the SDF’s maiden venture into utilizing a private-sector satellite constellation in low orbit.

Moreover, preparations are underway to finalize an agreement with another reputable company providing a similar service within the ongoing fiscal year. These combined efforts will significantly enhance the SDF’s communication infrastructure and capabilities, cementing Japan’s position at the forefront of military technology.
