A U.S. Air Force MQ-9 unmanned air vehicle had overran the runway at Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Kanoya Air Base on Aug. 22, the NHK has reported.
Video footage captured by NHK cameras situated near the base depicts the sequence of events. Following the unmanned aircraft’s landing, white smoke was seen as the drone slid along the runway’s path, and multiple firefighting vehicles were immediately dispatched to deal with the emergency. It was reported that the MQ-9 had come into contact with ground facilities and came to a stop on the runway’s edge. The incident took place around 11 a.m. local time.
The U.S. Air Force’s 319th Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron began deploying 8 MQ-9s to Kanoya in November last year. The unmanned aircraft is slated for surveillance and reconnaissance operations in the East China Sea and adjacent waters until November of this year.
